We wake up at 11 h 30 PM. The sun is going down and the water is frozen (-3 °C). Our shoes are wet and cold. After one hour ski, we arrive on the top of a big hill. The sky is all red and their is something like a lunar plain in front of us. In the distance we can see a very big and impressive river made of tens of arms. At the other side there is a group of ten persons (THE group). We soon reach the side of this impressive river network. We just look at each other, we don't need to talk, we know what rivers are; there is no choice, we have to cross; so the more rapid we will do it, the more easy it will be. Thanks to our mountain equipment we cross the river in two hours needing ropes, ice-screws, crampons (one pair for three), an ice axe and a huge amount of adrenaline We finally do it in the rules. The group was following us up and down the other side of the river interested in how we will get out of it. We finally meet them: they were led by [SJUR MORDRE]Sjur Mørdre and it was the group who wanted to cross the icecap with dogs. We talk for some time, but our feet were cold and we soon leave them. We ski 5 more hours. It's a broken land: there is a lot of little hills separated by crevasses, rivers or puddles. We stop in front of a big uncrossable canyon. The sun shines generously and it's warm: we hope our stuff will dry a little. Water has penetrated inside our pulkas and a lot of food is completely wet. Some is no more eatable. We are at 10 km of the end of the icecap. |
