During the morning, we have our last contacts with civilisation. Just before our departure, the greenlandic police come to check our equipment, [security device], [insurance] and [authorisation]. The helicopter takes off at 00 h 15 PM from Ammassalik and we are dropped at 00 h 45 PM on the ice cap, somewhere on the Hann glacier on the 1000 meters curve.
The weather is great: sun and no wind, but the snow is damn too wet. We rapidly set up the tents and begin to ski down the glacier with a minimal equipment in our back-pack. The first 7 km are easy to ski, but then we have to cross a 3 km long area of big open crevasses. The few snow bridges are fragile and we have some difficulties to find our way. But finally we reach the sea. There are no open water in the fjord and the sea is frozen. For the three of us, this is our first time on ice floes, but it will definitely not be last one. We have not yet really started this expedition, bur already willing to know what will be the next We now realize that we could have climbed this glacier with our sledges. It would have been difficult because of the open crevasses and bad snow, but it sure would have been possible. Somewhere behind the happiness of being now able to cross the ice cap from one side to the other, we are very disappointed we had not really started the expedition from here.
After some minutes walking on water, we start our way back to the camp, that we reach 5 hours later in a foggy weather. |
