Failures

up Kite Sailing Failures Equipment list

Unfortunately, during such a trip, some equipment may be damaged. And indeed, even if we thought we had choosen trustful products, we ran into some serious problems

Skis

We had Fischer E99 (with scales), with the red 98 design. Even if the ski is very nice to ski it should be avoided to bring them in expedition. The kernel of this ski is like butter. We had to move three times the bindings and screw them elsewhere on the skis because they were getting away from the ski too easily and the inserts we tried to fix didn't hold in place (this was really butter inside).
Using the same model, at least one other expedition (to the north pole) must have been rescued when all their skis (including the spare ones) were broken in the middle (at the rear screw level).
The explanation to this problem has been given by Fischer when we showed them the ski: this year, they had modified the kernel of the ski to make lighter, but less resistant. The older technique (so called sandwich-core) is suitable for engaged expedition. They sent us brand new GTS Mountain crown skis (a bit larger than the E99, and with better designed scales)

One Sport "North Pole" shoes

Warning: these shoes should be avoided!!!!

We had serious problem. The glue of the sole doesn't stick and the shoe is unusable within a few days. One of us had these shoes but, lack of trust, brought also another pair of shoes.

If you are said that La Ferriere, Hubert and Danscoever or some french militaries (on duty, just getting some army money to have some fun, a pity...) have used these shoes, answer that they had prototype, with another kind of material.

We have been refunded and One Sport stopped saling this @£$!!"+

Kites

As explained in here, we have mainly used Quadrifoil Q2000 4m2. Despite their efficiency, these kites are very fragile (much more, in my mind, than the competition serie models).
We broke the lines at many different locations (in fact, at any!)

ropes getting out from the command sticks have been either broken or extracted from their location
at many place in the cone de suspentage (mainly where several lines are linked together), strings did broke at the level of knots or elsewhere. It has happenned mainly to the front system of lines but also to the braking one
little lines get broken at some place in the middle of them; some other have been excessively rubbed.
some line did broke at the point where they are sewed to the sail

These problems happened mainly on skier falls or when taking off (even with care).
Hopefully, we had no problem with the tissue part.

After a while, with a very careful piloting style, we had much less breaks, but we could not avoid them at all.

During the 4 days of intensive use of the kites, we had a dozen of field repairs to achieve. Repairing a sail in arctic conditions (when obviously the wind is blowing) is sometimes no fun at all!
In our opinion, before such trips, the kite must be reinforced at every line junctions. Moreover, each skier must carry a small sail repair kit (line, small diameter rope and knife); it seems to be an excess load but it saves a lot of time when the last skier breaks something and when the repair kit is in the front skier sledge 500 meters away, and he has to walk the way back once he has understood there is a problem.

Anyway, with a careful preparation, using these quadrifoils kites when the wind is favorable is really a very efficient mean of rapid progression. Indeed, we have done a 101 kilometers 14 hours day... and we had a lot of fun!

Poles

Apart from the lost of a disc (we had a spare one and they should be dark to easily find them when lost in the snow, and as large as possible - Swix ones are fine), we broke a pole and bent another in the last part of the glacier (the last 20km were very bumpy). We had one spare pole.

Stove

More than a failure, we had a bad efficiency with the new Dragon Fly MSR stove (the new MSR multi-fuel, supposed to be more user-friendly than the XGK II). There are so many mobile parts that lack of efficiency can be hidden anywhere. We therefore did almost all the trip with the XGK II (supposed to be the spare stove).
Next time, we will carry 2 XGK II, lighter and more efficient. A repair kit, and O-rings in good shape must be taken.

Thermarest

Strange problem. The skin of the mattress didn't stick to the inside moss, and it made a very large bubble of air. We couldn't use it any more.
We had a spare one

Camera

The first day of the trip, the zoom lens of an Olympus camera fell into pieces. No explanation (perhaps a mistake of the place where it has been reviewed before we left.
Anyway, we could rely on two nikon FM 2

Little problems

the moss part on the North Face VE25 tent has been blown away by the wind during its setting up.
the pan handle has been broken. This pan is rather fragile, but it is very big (3.9l), so useful for three persons
