On January 2000, 6th, Emmanuel Eggermann and I (Alexandre Masselot) were heading towards Patagonia with the idea of crossing unsupported the Campo de Hielo Sur between Caleta Tortel (or Tortel) in Chile and Calafate in Argentina, 350km further.

The plan, in the unsupported tradition of linking two inhabited places (or more generally two "esthetically" disposed points on a map), was to split the expedition in 4 phases, as shown on the map:
  1. sea-kayaking from the little village of Tortel to the ice
  2. hiking up the glacier, to reach the skiable "plateau" of the icecap
  3. skiing to Estancia Cristina
  4. kayaking to the city of Calafate

Unfortunately, we were not able to leave from Tortel by kayak (but much nearer to the ice), and had to turn back once we had reached the "flat crevasse-free" area where we were supposed to start skiing. It was therefore 25 days of laborious expedition, with three days of kayak, the remaining of harassing portages, mainly in highly crevassed areas, and continuously under the rain.
